Termites: those silent destroyers that wreak havoc on your home’s structure. If you suspect termite activity or are simply taking a proactive approach to protect your investment, scheduling a termite inspection is wise. But before our expert inspectors arrive, there are a few things you can do to guarantee a thorough and efficient inspection.
- Clear Access to Walls. Termites often travel along walls, so providing clear access for inspection is important. Move furniture and stored items away from walls, leaving at least two to three feet of space. Pay close attention to areas where wood framing meets the foundation.
- Under Sinks. Termites are attracted to moisture, so areas under sinks are prime termite inspection spots. Remove items stored under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow easy access to pipes and plumbing.
- Attic and Crawl Spaces. These areas are often dark and undisturbed, making them ideal for termite activity. Ensure access to the attic and any crawl spaces by removing stored items and clutter.
- Landscaping. Trim back any shrubs, bushes, or tree branches that touch the house. This allows the inspector to examine the foundation and siding for signs of termite activity.
- Woodpiles and Debris. Store firewood away from the house and remove any wood debris, leaves, or mulch piled against the foundation. These materials attract termites and provide easy access to your home.
- Don’t Disturb Suspected Areas. If you’ve noticed signs of termites, such as mud tubes or wood damage, avoid disturbing these areas before the inspection. This allows the inspector to assess the situation accurately.
- Be Prepared to Answer Questions. The inspector may ask about the history of the home, any previous termite treatments, and any concerns you have. Be prepared to provide this information.
